UINR Moose Management Coordinator Clifford Paul reports “We are happy to announce that our moose harvest on North Mountain wrapped up on December 10, 2016.
“This year we harvested 50 moose in a humane and respectful manner.
“It was a very successful harvest, greatly due to the professionalism and enthusiasm of our harvest teams who ensured that safety was alway a top priority in working towards our goals. They are to be commended for their efforts in working to achieve a balanced ecosystem and ultimately a healthy boreal forest.”
All meat will be distributed to Mi’kmaq communities across Nova Scotia, the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, and other areas of need across Nova Scotia. Kwilmu’kw Maw-klusuaqn Negotiation Office, on behalf of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs, is overseeing the distribution. The pelts will be used by Mi’kmaq Elders to make clothing and other traditional items.
“UINR and Parks Canada are committed to restoring forest health in Cape Breton Highlands National Park through the Bring Back the Boreal project. The moose population reduction is only one part of the larger project aimed at restoring forest health in the Park. Other components of the project include prescribed burns, tree planting, and building fences to keep moose from browsing young trees.”
