Charlie Joe Dennis Memorial Scholarship
Charlie Joe Dennis, the founder of Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources, was a community leader and former chief of Eskasoni First Nation. Charlie embodied Netukulimk, the sacred responsibility of caring for Wksɨtqamu, and he did i t through kindness, humour and his ability to bring people together for a common good. His teachings continue to guide UINR’s work, and we hope these scholarships, in memory of Charlie Joe, will encourage community members to pursue education and careers in science and technology.
There are five $1000 scholarships available.
Eligibility
Scholarships are awarded based on demonstration of leadership, academic achievement and community involvement.
Applicants must be a registered band member of the Unama’ki District, currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level certificate, diploma or degree program, or a recent (2025) graduate of one of the following fields of study:
- Sciences, including Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Integrative Sciences
- Technology, including Environment, Engineering, Surveying/Mapping
- Natural Resources
How to Apply
Applicants are asked to submit:
- A two-page double-spaced essay emphasizing present and future contributions to science or technology within the Mi’kmaw community;
- A transcript of marks from your university or college;
- A letter of recommendation from a professor or advisor.
